Birth Control Prices Go Up For Some Students and They Stay Free For Others

By Mike DeVonish at 7:22 pm on November 29, 2007 | 1 Comment

The deficit reduction act of 2005 had the side effect of affecting birth control pill prices at colleges. Columbia has decided to raise the prices for those in their health care plan. Dartmouth decides to keep birth control free fro students. This is a little weird to me since Columbia is one of the biggest property owners of manhattan’s upper west side, including Harlem, making them a fat cat.I don’t know how much cash Dartmouth has but it seems like they’ve their priorities pointing in a different direction than Columbia.More…

Dartmouth has their stand…

“Although the Deficit Reduction Act of 2005 has led students at other colleges to encounter stiff cost increases in birth control, Dartmouth has maintained its policy of providing birth control for free to students under the Dartmouth Student Group Health Plan.” thedartmouth.com/2007/11/28/news/birthcontrol/

Columbia has theirs…

“Many U.S. students have seen a sharp rise in the cost of their contraception lately, a consequence of the federal Deficit Reduction Act of 2005, effective at the start of this year. At Columbia, women have had to account for the price increases on their own, as Health Services can no longer afford to provide for discounted forms of birth control and emergency contraceptives. For the moment, Barnard College Health Services is still able to offer low prices through stockpiles of these medications, but these stores are limited. Although the only real way to ensure cheap birth control for all students is to address the effects of the 2005 DRA through further legislation, Columbia and Barnard College Health Services should be granted the resources to ensure that such stockpiles are maintained in the interim. The financial pinch felt by many Columbia women in the past year is strong evidence that the University should take immediate action and ensure that its students’ health is fully protected.”

“Researchers attending a pharmaceutical convention in San Diego announce that the future of male contraception may come in a pill form.”

For some reason the “embed” link doesn’t work…it does something dumb which is to have you copy then past the link to see the vid.
Here’s the link to the vid:

Birth Control Pills Not As Effective As In The Past News Video

By Mike DeVonish at 12:44 am on November 19, 2007 | No comments

Birth control pills aren’t as effective as they used to be. This mainly due to the lower dosages of estrogen. What do you get from a birth control pill that’s now 98% effective instead of 99% effective…fewer instances of side effects. High estrogen levels is what caused the Ortho Evra birth control patch side effects and lawsuits.

Here is the story and the news video: cbs4denver.com/seenon/local_story_023191711.html

BTW news organizations SUCK. You have to go to their site to watch the vid…That’s just silly…especially when they offer an embed link so you could watch it here on the site!

This story is a year old but it’s important for anyone making a decision.

Check this out too:

Because of the lower effectiveness, the FDA is thinking about setting standards in birth control drugs. Read that story. Then they decide it may be a bad idea…as usual…they can’t figure out what they want to do.

Emergency Contraception and Morning After Fact Sheet

By Mike DeVonish at 6:50 am on November 17, 2007 | No comments

I’m not crazy about Plan B but it is a birth control option. I started to do some research on the various Plan B methods when I came across this.

“Emergency contraception is used after unprotected sex to prevent a pregnancy from starting. It is most effective when it is used as soon as possible after intercourse. It is not necessary to take a pregnancy test before using emergency contraception.”

For some women, using birth control pills or an IUD reduces the urge for sex. Almost makes you wonder whats the point of the pill if you don’t want sex? Going back to condoms may be best for some. Fortunately, my spouse doesn’t suffer form this or many side effects at all. (Read on …)
